The organizations represented on this site encourage participation, leadership, education, and research in cardiothoracic surgery. You’ll find numerous award and scholarship applications for cardiothoracic surgery residents, researchers and surgeons, general surgery residents, and medical students. Each organization has its own unique offerings, providing a variety of opportunities to become involved in and learn more about cardiothoracic surgery.
As you navigate your way through this site, you may find that you are eligible for more than one scholarship.
If you would like to apply for more than one, be sure to submit a completed application for each individual scholarship. Please take note of varying application schedules, including open and close dates, review periods, and award announcement dates.
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Looking to the Future Scholarship is for U.S. or Canadian medical students and general surgery residents interested in but not yet committed to a career in cardiothoracic surgery. This scholarship underwrites expenses for attendance at the STS Annual Meeting and provides mentorship to aspiring cardiothoracic surgeons.
The application process for the 2021 STS Looking to the Future Scholarship is closed.
The Thoracic Surgery Foundation (TSF) offers a variety of grants and educational scholarships for cardiothoracic surgery surgeons.
Grant Applications Accepted:
The Southern Thoracic Surgical Association (STSA) offers scholarships for medical students and general surgery residents to attend the STSA Annual Meeting.
The application process for the 2020 STSA James W. Brooks Medical Student and Resident Scholarships is closed.
Women in Thoracic Surgery (WTS) offers scholarships to attend the STS, STSA and WTSA Annual Meetings for female medical students, general surgery residents, cardiothoracic surgery residents, and women postdoctoral candidates in a research or other gap year who have graduated medical school who are committed to cardiothoracic surgery. WTS also offers a traveling fellowship to support medical students and general surgery residents to gain exposure to women cardiothoracic surgeons.

WTS Carpenter Scholarship:
UPDATE 7/29/2020: Due to changing developments and the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the STSA 67th Annual Meeting, scheduled for November 4-7, 2020, has been canceled. Based on these circumstances, WTS is not able to offer and administer the 2020 WTS Carpenter Scholarship.
WTS Scholarship Program
UPDATE 10/7/20: Without a COVID vaccine or an end to the pandemic firmly on the horizon, the STS has made the difficult decision to forgo an in-person 2021 Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas, next January and, instead, create an all-digital meeting. Based on these circumstances, WTS is not able to offer and administer the 2021 WTS Scholarship Program.
WTS Brigid Scanlan Traveling Mentorship Award
The application process for the 2021 WTS Brigid Scanlan Traveling Mentorship is planned to open in November 2020.
WTS Thistlethwaite Scholarship
The application process for the 2020 WTS Thistlethwaite Scholarship is closed.
UPDATE 4/14/2020: The WTSA 46th Annual Meeting, scheduled for June 24-27, 2020 in Vail, CO has been canceled due to the evolving COVID-19 situation. Based on the circumstances, WTS is no longer able to offer and administer the 2020 WTS Thistlethwaite Scholarship.
