The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Looking to the Future Scholarship underwrites expenses for attendance at the STS Annual Meeting and provides mentorship to aspiring cardiothoracic surgeons.

Scholarships include complimentary registration for the STS 55th Annual Meeting, January 27-29, 2019 in San Diego, CA; a three-night stay at an STS-designated hotel; participation in exclusive events; and reimbursement of up to $500 in related travel expenses.

Qualified applicants include general surgery residents and medical students training in the U.S. or Canada who are considering a career in cardiothoracic surgery. The primary goal of the scholarship is to provide mentorship for the best and brightest of these applicants in hopes of encouraging them to pursue CT surgery. Priority will be given to applicants who have not attended a national cardiothoracic surgery meeting or received another CT surgery meeting scholarship (such as recipients of an AATS Member for a Day scholarship, a STSA Brooks Scholarship, or a WTS scholarship). Please note previous Looking to the Future Scholarship recipients are not eligible; however, previous applicants are encouraged to re-apply.

As part of the application process, scholarship candidates must complete an online application; submit a resume or CV; and a letter of recommendation signed by his or her Program Director or cardiothoracic surgery mentor. Medical student recommendations may come from an active faculty member at the student's medical school.

All 2018 STS Looking to the Future Scholarship materials (application, CV, and letter of recommendation) must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. CT, Friday, September 21, 2018. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Scholarship recipients will be announced in November. If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Pebworth at
